In 2017, global fig production stood at 1.15 million tons. Turkey is the biggest producer of figs in the world with a market share of 26%. Figs grow all around Turkey however production is concentrated in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions of the country. Aydın is the centre of fig production where most of the harvest is dried. Aydın accounts for 60% of production followed by Izmir with 15%. Although Turkey is the biggest producer and exporter of dried figs, a rise in global demand has resulted in a rapid expansion of plantations which is now in the region of 7.5 million trees. A record breaking 90,000 tons of dried figs were produced in the 2019/2020 season.
