Pomegranate is a temperate climate perennial bush with a very strong root system, multiple trunks and dense branches which bear male-female and hermaphrodite flowers that grow into large spherical, slightly oblate fruit. The fruit is rich in Vitamin C as well as considerable amounts of Vitamins B1 and B2, calcium and phosphorus. The plant blooms in June and July and the fruit is harvested between 5 – 25 October.

This is a patented cultivar developed by the Antalya Western Mediterranean Research Institute (BATEM) which is very popular in the domestic and international markets. Most of Turkey’s pomegranate exports are of the Hicaz variety. This is a late maturing variety which is usually harvested between 5 – 25 October. It is very suitable for storage where it can be kept for up to six months. Depending on regional conditions, soil and maintenance, economic level production starts in the third year at the earliest. The fruit is large and heavy. The skin is red and the fruit is crimson. Water yield is 48.01%, fruit yield 50%. Seeds moderately are hard. Yield is >41 kg/tree. Hicaz is Suitable for fresh consumption and industrial processing. 85% of pomegranates grown in Turkey are of the Hicaz cultivar.

Trial growing of this cultivar started in Turkey in 2000. Wonderful accounts for 8% of total domestic production. The medium and large fruit has a dark red skin. The fruit clusters are large and slightly tart. Foreign markets are familiar with this cultivar, so demand is high. Storage life is shorter compared to Hicaz.
