Cucumber is an annual, cultivated vegetable from the Cucurbitaceae family that grows on a creeping vine. The plant enjoys moist soils so the root system is close to the surface, no deeper than 20-25 cm. In greenhouse conditions, the cucumber vine is suspended in which case the plant is pruned to improve light penetration. Suspended cucumber vines can grow as high as 2 metres. Out of season greenhouse cucumbers fetch good prices on the domestic market in Turkey. The most exported varieties are the bumpy-skin gherkins and the Langa. Antalya is the centre of greenhouse cucumber production in Turkey. The growers in Gazipasa and Kumluca account for 95% of production.
