Today, oranges rank just behind apples as the most consumed fruit in the world. The majority of the oranges in Turkey are grown in Antalya and Mersin, in the Mediterranean Region. Turkey accounts for 3.7% of global orange production, ranking it the seventh largest producer and fourth largest exporter. Oranges make up 50% of total citrus fruit production. This round fruit is the definition of the colour orange. It is highly nutritional and very appealing. Oranges are intolerant to temperatures below -2o C. Frost damage on the fruit depends on the duration.

Washington Navel is a moderately early maturing variety that was introduced in Turkey from California in 1945. The rind is dark orange, slightly pebbly and average in thickness. The rind is adherent to the flesh. It keeps well during transport and storage. This exceptionally delicious variety is usually seedless, though rarely a couple can be found. It is a very popular fresh consumption variety on the Turkish market.

This is a Navel type orange originating from California. The tree is sturdy and vigorous. It is a high yield cultivar which matures two weeks before Washington. The fruit is smaller, more oval in shape and slightly lower in quality compared to Washington Navel. Navel has a sugar content of 11.2%, acidity of 0.89% and sugar/acid ratio of 12.6. It is one of the earliest maturing cultivars in the obovoid orange group.

This is another navel orange selection that was identified as a sport on a Washington Navel tree in Spain. The tree is vigorous and larger than the Washington Navel but it is thorny. The fruit is medium sized, yet smaller than the Washington variety. The flesh is juicy, sweet, aromatic and seedless. The fruit keeps well on the tree for more than four months.

Valencia was first introduced in Turkey from Italy in 1936. The rind is yellow, slightly pebbly and moderately adhered to the flesh. The skin around the segments is usually relatively thick. Valencia is good for transport and storage. This variety is suitable for fresh consumption and for industrial production. Valencia is slightly oval and almost seedless. This is a late maturing variety which is harvested in March and April. The fruit keeps well on the tree for a long time. Valencia is the most resilient to high temperatures. There are several sub varieties including Delta, Midnight, Olinda and Valencia Late. Midnight and Delta are quite high-quality sub-varieties which are now considered to be separate strains.
